How to Crop PDF Margins with Measurements

By PDFSwan · Updated · 3 min read

Cropping can make a PDF easier to view by hiding excess margins around the page content. PDFSwan Crop PDF lets you enter how much to trim from each side and applies those measurements to every page’s current crop box.

When to use Crop PDF

Use this tool to adjust the visible page area. It does not permanently delete the hidden content, and it must not be used to conceal confidential information. For a smaller standard paper size with scaled content, choose Resize PDF instead.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Load the source file

Open the Crop PDF workspace using the button above. Choose the source file from your device or drag it into the drop area. Wait for preparation to finish and check the displayed filename. Work from a copy you can retain for comparison, and clear the workspace if you selected the wrong source.

  2. Set all four margins

Enter Top, Right, Bottom, and Left margin values in millimeters. Each defaults to 5 mm. Set a side to 0 if you want to leave that edge unchanged. The accepted range for each measurement is 0–300 mm.

  3. Check the smallest page

The same trim applies to every page. Mixed-size documents need extra care, because a margin suitable for a large sheet can remove important visible content on a smaller page. Reduce the crop if the remaining area would be too small.

  4. Download and verify the result

After processing finishes, select Download PDF. Save the new file before closing the tab or creating another result. Open the actual download in a compatible application and compare it with the source. Check the content and format you need rather than relying only on the success message.

A practical example

A scanned report has a wide blank left border. Set Left to 10 mm and the other margins to 0. Create and download the PDF, then inspect several pages for headings, page numbers, and annotations near the trimmed edge. If the trim is excessive, return to the original and use a smaller value.

Tips for a better result

Cropping is reversible hiding

The tool changes a visible-page boundary. Content outside that boundary can still exist in the file and may be recoverable by changing the crop box. Use a dedicated redaction workflow to remove sensitive material.

Watch rotated pages

Margins refer to the underlying PDF crop coordinates. Existing rotation can affect which visible edge corresponds to a particular underlying side. Test a small adjustment and inspect the output before applying aggressive measurements.

Troubleshooting

Why does the tool say too little page area remains?

The sum of the trims leaves insufficient visible width or height. Reduce the opposing margins and try again.

Why is the cropped PDF not much smaller?

Cropping changes visibility rather than removing all hidden page data. It is not a compression tool.

File limits, privacy and keeping your originals

PDFSwan processes document bytes locally in your browser without a document upload. The task limits are 50 MB total input, 60 files, and 300 PDF pages. Actual performance depends on your device and browser memory. Encrypted PDFs are rejected; choose an unlocked copy you are authorized to edit. Keep your originals, because page operations and edits may change bookmarks, forms, links, annotations, and existing digital signatures.

The home page includes Google Analytics and DeanonX site-tracking scripts. Local document processing does not mean the website has no third-party tracking. Download the result before closing the tab, and use Clear workspace to remove files from the active workspace when finished.

Frequently asked questions

Can cropping securely remove private text?

No. Hidden content may remain recoverable.

Can I crop only one page here?

This tool applies the entered margins to all pages. There is no individual-page crop selection.

Ready to try it?

Follow the steps with a copy of your document, then check the downloaded result before sharing it.
