How to Clear Standard Metadata from a PDF

By PDFSwan · Updated · 3 min read

A PDF can contain document properties such as title, author, creation dates, and the software used to produce it. PDFSwan Clear PDF details removes a defined set of standard information fields and document-level XMP from a new copy.

When to use Clear PDF details

Use this tool for clearing standard document properties. It does not remove everything that might identify a person or document. Page text, pictures, annotations, embedded files, and other data can remain. Treat it as a focused metadata operation rather than complete sanitization.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Load the source file

Open the Clear PDF details workspace using the button above. Choose the source file from your device or drag it into the drop area. Wait for preparation to finish and check the displayed filename. Work from a copy you can retain for comparison, and clear the workspace if you selected the wrong source.

  2. Inspect the original document

Review both its property panel and visible pages. Decide whether the issue is a standard metadata value or information present in the actual content. Only the former is addressed by this tool.

  3. Create a cleared copy

Load the PDF, set a distinct File name, and select Create PDF. There are no per-field checkboxes. The operation clears the standard fields together.

  4. Download and verify the result

After processing finishes, select Download PDF. Save the new file before closing the tab or creating another result. Open the actual download in a compatible application and compare it with the source. Check the content and format you need rather than relying only on the success message.

A practical example

A draft PDF has an outdated Author value and an internal software title in its properties. Create a cleared copy and inspect the downloaded file’s document-properties panel. Also review the pages themselves: a name printed in a footer remains visible and is not removed by clearing the Author property.

Tips for a better result

Know the removal scope

The tool clears standard title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation and modification dates, plus document-level XMP. That defined scope does not establish that every metadata-like value elsewhere in the PDF is gone.

Check filenames and visible content separately

A descriptive filename, a scanned letterhead, or an attachment can still disclose information. Clearing standard metadata does not rename other copies or redact anything on the pages.

Troubleshooting

Why can I still find a name in the PDF?

The name may be visible page text, an annotation, an embedded file, or another object outside the cleared standard fields.

Why does a viewer show a filename as the title?

A viewer may fall back to the filename when the Title property is empty. Check the actual document-properties panel.

File limits, privacy and keeping your originals

PDFSwan processes document bytes locally in your browser without a document upload. The task limits are 50 MB total input, 60 files, and 300 PDF pages. Actual performance depends on your device and browser memory. Encrypted PDFs are rejected; choose an unlocked copy you are authorized to edit. Keep your originals, because page operations and edits may change bookmarks, forms, links, annotations, and existing digital signatures.

The home page includes Google Analytics and DeanonX site-tracking scripts. Local document processing does not mean the website has no third-party tracking. Download the result before closing the tab, and use Clear workspace to remove files from the active workspace when finished.
