How to Draw and Place a Signature on a PDF

By PDFSwan · Updated · 3 min read

A drawn signature can be placed visibly onto a PDF without printing and scanning it. PDFSwan Sign PDF gives you a drawing pad and inserts your drawing as an image on a selected page.

When to use Sign PDF

Use this tool when you need a visible handwritten-style mark and the recipient accepts that workflow. It does not create a certificate-based digital signature, verify identity, send a signature request, or produce an audit trail. Confirm the required signature format with the recipient when necessary.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Load the source file

Open the Sign PDF workspace using the button above. Choose the source file from your device or drag it into the drop area. Wait for preparation to finish and check the displayed filename. Work from a copy you can retain for comparison, and clear the workspace if you selected the wrong source.

  2. Draw your signature

Use a pointer or touch input in Draw your signature. Make a continuous visible stroke. Use Clear signature to erase the drawing and try again. The pad’s wide shape is preserved when the drawing is placed in the PDF.

  3. Set page, placement and width

Choose Page number, From left, From bottom, and Signature width in PDF points. The default width is 180 points, or 2.5 inches. At that width the full drawing-pad image is about 64.8 points high. Leave room for the whole image on the selected page.

  4. Download and verify the result

After processing finishes, select Download PDF. Save the new file before closing the tab or creating another result. Open the actual download in a compatible application and compare it with the source. Check the content and format you need rather than relying only on the success message.

A practical example

To place a signature near the bottom of a one-page document, start with page 1, 36 points from the left, 48 from the bottom, and width 180. Draw your mark, create the PDF, and inspect the actual download. If it misses the signature line, adjust the coordinates and regenerate from the original.

Tips for a better result

Account for blank drawing space

The entire drawing pad becomes the inserted image, including blank areas around the strokes. Draw at a useful scale in the pad and inspect how much space the final mark occupies.

Preserve important originals

Adding a signature image edits the PDF and cannot preserve an existing digital signature unchanged. Keep a copy of the document before editing and use the exact workflow required for the transaction.

Troubleshooting

Why does it ask me to draw first?

The pad needs a visible stroke. A single tap may not produce a usable signature drawing.

Why does the signature not fit?

Reduce its width or move the position inward. Both the image width and its proportional height must fit within the page.

File limits, privacy and keeping your originals

PDFSwan processes document bytes locally in your browser without a document upload. The task limits are 50 MB total input, 60 files, and 300 PDF pages. Actual performance depends on your device and browser memory. Encrypted PDFs are rejected; choose an unlocked copy you are authorized to edit. Keep your originals, because page operations and edits may change bookmarks, forms, links, annotations, and existing digital signatures.

The home page includes Google Analytics and DeanonX site-tracking scripts. Local document processing does not mean the website has no third-party tracking. Download the result before closing the tab, and use Clear workspace to remove files from the active workspace when finished.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a certificate-based digital signature?

No. It inserts a drawn signature image.

Can I send the file for someone else to sign?

This tool does not send requests. Download the file and use the recipient’s required sharing process.

Ready to try it?

Follow the steps with a copy of your document, then check the downloaded result before sharing it.
