How to Extract Pages from a PDF into a New File
Sometimes you need a few useful pages rather than a complete PDF. Extracting pages lets you save a single receipt from a records bundle, share an exercise from a workbook, or send only the relevant appendix from a report. PDFSwan Extract pages creates one new PDF containing the pages you choose while keeping your original file unchanged.
Open Extract pages ↗When to use Extract pages
Use Extract pages when you know which page positions you want to save. Enter a single page, one range, or several comma-separated selections. The result contains those selected pages together in one file. It does not extract pictures, recognize scanned text, or save each selected page as a separate download.
Step-by-step instructions
Find the pages in the source document
Open the original PDF in a viewer and note the physical positions of the pages you need. Count from the first page of the file, including the cover and contents. Printed page numbers may differ from these positions.
Load the source PDF
Open Extract pages and add one PDF through the file chooser or drop area. Wait until the source page count is shown. If you chose the wrong source, clear the workspace before adding another file.
Enter your selection
In Pages to keep, enter a single number such as 6, a range such as 6-9, or a combination such as 2, 6-9, 14. Use a hyphen for a range and commas between selections. A blank field keeps every page, so enter a selection when you want only part of the document.
Set the output order and filename
Comma-separated selections appear in the sequence you enter. For example, 8, 2-3 puts source page 8 first, followed by pages 2 and 3. Each range must still be ascending. Set a filename that describes the extracted material, such as report-budget-appendix.
Create and download
Select Create PDF and then Download PDF. Open the saved document and verify that every selected page is present, the order is correct, and no unwanted pages remain. Save the download before generating another selection.
A practical example
A 30-page records bundle contains an invoice on source page 7 and its supporting notes on pages 12–13. Enter 7, 12-13 to create a 3-page PDF. If the notes should come first, enter 12-13, 7 instead. To save the invoice as its own separate PDF, use 7 alone and download that result before creating another file.
Tips for a better result
Check page labels before selecting
A report might begin with a cover, two introductory pages, and then printed page 1. In that case printed page 1 is physical PDF page 4. Confirm the position in the viewer’s page counter rather than entering the printed label blindly.
Avoid overlaps unless you want duplicates
Entering 2-4, 4 repeats source page 4. If you want pages 2, 3, and 4 once each, use 2-4. Duplicates count toward the 300-page output limit, even if they come from a short source.
Review more than the page count
The correct number of pages does not prove that the correct content was selected. Open each page of a small extraction and check headings or identifying details. Copying pages can change bookmarks, links, annotations, forms, and signatures, so verify any important document features too.
Troubleshooting
Why is the selection invalid?
Only existing page positions are accepted, starting at 1. Use ascending ranges such as 3-6. Do not type words like page, use semicolons, or enter page numbers beyond the source count.
Why did the entire PDF download?
Leaving Pages to keep blank selects all pages. Enter the exact page numbers and generate the PDF again.
Why are pages repeated?
The tool follows the sequence exactly, including duplicate or overlapping selections. Remove repeated numbers and overlapping ranges before creating another output.
File limits, privacy and keeping your originals
PDFSwan processes document bytes locally in your browser without a document upload. The task limits are 50 MB total input, 60 files, and 300 PDF pages. Actual performance depends on your device and browser memory. Encrypted PDFs are rejected; choose an unlocked copy you are authorized to edit. Keep your originals, because page operations and edits may change bookmarks, forms, links, annotations, and existing digital signatures.
The home page includes Google Analytics and DeanonX site-tracking scripts. Local document processing does not mean the website has no third-party tracking. Download the result before closing the tab, and use Clear workspace to remove files from the active workspace when finished.
Frequently asked questions
Can I extract one page from a PDF?
Yes. Enter that page’s physical position in Pages to keep, create the PDF, and download the single-page result.
Can I extract nonconsecutive pages?
Yes. Separate page numbers and ranges with commas, such as 1, 5, 9-11.
Is extracting pages the same as deleting them?
