How to Split a PDF and Save Selected Page Ranges
A long PDF often contains more than you need to send. You might want only one chapter from a manual, a few statements from a records bundle, or a section of a report. PDFSwan Split PDF lets you enter the page numbers you want to keep and save those pages together in one new PDF.
Open Split PDF ↗When to use Split PDF
Use Split PDF to make a smaller document from selected pages of one source. This tool produces one PDF for each run. For a separate file for every page in a ZIP archive, choose the Split into files tool instead. To save several chapters as individual documents, run it once for each chapter and give each download a different filename.
Step-by-step instructions
Choose the PDF to split
Open Split PDF, then choose one PDF or drag it into the workspace. Wait until the file list shows its page count. The tool works with one source at a time. Clear the workspace before choosing a different PDF.
Find the physical page numbers
Open your source in a PDF viewer and find the pages you need by their position in the file. A printed page label can differ from its position: a cover and contents page may make printed page 1 the third PDF page. The range field uses positions starting at 1.
Enter Pages to keep
In Pages to keep, type a single page such as 4, a range such as 4-9, or a combination such as 1-3, 7, 10-12. Use commas between selections and a hyphen inside each range. Each range must run from a lower page number to a higher one.
Name and create the output
Change File name to describe the selection, such as training-manual-chapter-two. Select Create PDF. If a range is invalid, correct the field using the message shown. Leaving Pages to keep blank includes every source page.
Download and confirm the selection
Select Download PDF after the result appears. Open the saved file and check the first and last selected pages, the total page count, and the sequence. Keep the original if you need to create another selection later.
A practical example
For a 20-page report, entering 1-2, 8, 15-17 produces a 6-page PDF containing source pages 1, 2, 8, 15, 16, and 17 in that order. Entering 15-17, 1-2 places the later section first. The sequence of comma-separated selections controls output order; each individual range still needs to be ascending.
Tips for a better result
Avoid accidental duplicates
Overlapping selections repeat pages. For example, 1-3, 3-5 includes page 3 twice, giving six output pages. If you want pages 1 through 5 once each, enter 1-5. The total selected output must remain at or below 300 pages.
Save several separate documents
To separate chapters 1–5 and 6–10, first enter 1-5, create the PDF, and download it with a chapter-specific filename. Then change the range to 6-10 and create the second PDF. Download each result before generating the next one.
Understand what splitting changes
The source is not overwritten. The new file contains copied pages, and document-level features such as bookmarks, forms, annotations, links, or signatures may change. Verify important interactive content after saving. The tool does not remove hidden information from pages you keep.
Troubleshooting
Why does a range fail?
Page numbers must be between 1 and the source page count. A range such as 9-4 is invalid, as is page 0 or a number beyond the last page. Use a normal hyphen and commas, for example 2-4, 8.
Why did I get one file instead of separate files?
That is the current behavior: selected pages are collected into one new PDF. Repeat the process for each separate output you need.
Why are the wrong pages included?
Check physical page positions rather than printed labels. Covers, inserts, and Roman-numeral front matter often explain the difference.
File limits, privacy and keeping your originals
PDFSwan processes document bytes locally in your browser without a document upload. The task limits are 50 MB total input, 60 files, and 300 PDF pages. Actual performance depends on your device and browser memory. Encrypted PDFs are rejected; choose an unlocked copy you are authorized to edit. Keep your originals, because page operations and edits may change bookmarks, forms, links, annotations, and existing digital signatures.
The home page includes Google Analytics and DeanonX site-tracking scripts. Local document processing does not mean the website has no third-party tracking. Download the result before closing the tab, and use Clear workspace to remove files from the active workspace when finished.
Frequently asked questions
Can I split a PDF into individual pages?
You can save individual pages by entering one page number per run and downloading each result. Use the separate Split into files tool to create one PDF per page automatically in a ZIP.
Does splitting delete pages from my original?
No. PDFSwan creates a new download. Your original file stays on your device.
Can I reverse a page range?
A range must be ascending. To reverse a short selection, enter individual positions in the desired order, such as 5, 4, 3.
Are Split PDF and Extract pages different here?
They currently use the same page-selection behavior. Both save the chosen pages from one source into one new PDF.
Ready to try it?
Follow the steps with a copy of your document, then check the downloaded result before sharing it.
