How to Convert PDF Text to Markdown

By PDFSwan · Updated · 3 min read

Markdown is convenient for notes, documentation, and text-based publishing workflows. PDFSwan PDF to Markdown exports selectable text into an MD file with a heading for each source page. It gives you a simple starting point for rewriting a PDF’s content into structured documentation.

When to use PDF to Markdown

Choose this tool when you want page-based text in a Markdown file. The converter adds page headings and separators; it does not infer the document’s real heading hierarchy or rebuild tables, image references, lists, and other semantic formatting.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Load the source file

Open the PDF to Markdown workspace using the button above. Choose the source file from your device or drag it into the drop area. Wait for preparation to finish and check the displayed filename. Work from a copy you can retain for comparison, and clear the workspace if you selected the wrong source.

  2. Check for selectable source text

Open the PDF in a reader and try selecting words from several pages. A document made from image scans needs an existing OCR layer before text can be extracted. This workspace does not include OCR.

  3. Create the MD export

Load the PDF, choose an output File name, and select Create MD. Every page with extracted text contributes to the page-based output. Open the download in a Markdown editor or plain text editor.

  4. Download and verify the result

After processing finishes, select Download MD. Save the new file before closing the tab or creating another result. Open the actual download in a compatible application and compare it with the source. Check the content and format you need rather than relying only on the success message.

A practical example

For a workshop handout, export an MD copy and use the generated Page 1, Page 2, and later headings to compare text with the source. Replace those headings with topic names, turn instructions into proper Markdown lists, and check the rendered preview before adding the result to documentation.

Tips for a better result

Add semantic structure yourself

Decide which lines are headings, list items, code, or table cells. The generated page headings describe where text came from, not what it means. Careful editing makes the file more useful than leaving the page divisions as the final structure.

Preview special characters

Extracted text can contain characters that Markdown treats as formatting. Review a rendered preview for unexpected emphasis, headings, or list markers, and escape characters where necessary.

Troubleshooting

Why are the original headings not formatted?

The exporter does not infer semantic heading levels. It adds its own page headings and preserves extracted text beneath them.

Why are tables flattened into text?

There is no table reconstruction in this tool. Rebuild the table manually or inspect a CSV export as an alternative starting point.

File limits, privacy and keeping your originals

PDFSwan processes document bytes locally in your browser without a document upload. The task limits are 50 MB total input, 60 files, and 300 PDF pages. Actual performance depends on your device and browser memory. Encrypted PDFs are rejected; choose an unlocked copy you are authorized to edit. Keep your originals, because page operations and edits may change bookmarks, forms, links, annotations, and existing digital signatures.

The home page includes Google Analytics and DeanonX site-tracking scripts. Local document processing does not mean the website has no third-party tracking. Download the result before closing the tab, and use Clear workspace to remove files from the active workspace when finished.

Frequently asked questions

Does the output include images?

No. This is a selectable-text export with page headings.

Can I convert a scan directly to Markdown?

Only if it already has a readable text layer. OCR is not available in this workspace.

Ready to try it?

Follow the steps with a copy of your document, then check the downloaded result before sharing it.
